Cyndi Lauper Doesn’t Need Your Approval

I may be a Southern lady, however when I’m pissed I will cuss and seriously y’all, this weekend’s paparazzi pics of Cyndi Lauper at the beach and the web’s reaction to them deserve a big “What the fuck?” as far as I’m concerned. Look, the paps can go take as many photos of 20 and 30 somethings as they want and then we bloggers can rightfully have a field day with the pics pointed out who looked one way in Maxim and then revealed themselves as they really look un-photoshopped. BUT leave out the 50+ celebs who never purported to be sex symbols and did just fine on their talent alone. It’s been nearly 25 years since Cyndi took her famous cover photo for her first album–should we expect her to still look like that, really?

Cyndi Lauper is gifted, kewl, and inspiring. She’s always been non-cookie cutter and therefore amazing. She proudly embraced being quirky (i.e. “She’s So Unusual”) and inspired thousands of girls (myself included) to be love our weird individuality. It’s not a big deal that she hasn’t carved herself up or had fat sucked out in the name of age prevention. She doesn’t have to. It’s not what she’s about. So anyone who is circulating her bathing suit pics and bad-mouthing them needs to remember that they will be 54 one day too, only most likely without an iota of the talent and confidence Cyndi Lauper possesses.(Okay, the rant’s over now.
